Translucid Stencil Tiles

One of the research themes in 2014 focused on the cultural heritage of traditional Portuguese tile-patterns. The project Translucid Stencil Tiles resulted from a knowledge exchange with Maria Caetano from “Lugar da Cerâmica.” She shared the methodology behind the creation of traditional tiles, which then resulted in a series of patterns cut in acrylic sheets at FABLAB Lisboa.

These stencils became an important tool to invite a broad public to contribute and be part of various interventional architecture projects. From the touristic and upper class neighbourhoods of Castelo and Jardim das Amoreiras, to the middle-class Alvalade and Campo Santana, through to the former fishing village of Trafaria, the Translucid Stencil Tiles workshops gathered everyone around the same creative practice. The main positive impact of this tool is the creation of a personal bridge that helps overcome social, language, and age barriers, leading people to communicate openly and allowing new relationships to form.
